How many trips did you have to make to the local tip, sorry, civic amenities facility after Christmas? Did you wish you had a lot more space in your car to take all the rubbish? Come to that it's not just after Christmas is it. Every week of the year we seem to end up with piles of cardboard and other such packaging materials to get rid of.

Even if you're lucky enough to live in an area where the council provides a good recycling service for at least some of this stuff the chances are you'll have more than will go in the bin or box provided so you're still left with the job of getting rid of it yourself. Now a trip to the civic amenities centre, as the councils like to call the local tip, is not everybody's idea of a pleasant outing, so the fewer times you have to do it the better.

No doubt you have to make several trips each time because the amount you can get in your car at one go is pretty limited. So what can you do. You don't want the expense of a bigger car so what's the answer. The answer my friend is not blowing in the wind but it is staring you in the face, the car roof!

Think about that. You could just fit an old fashioned roof rack but what a work up lashing everything down on it and undoing it all when you get to the tip. What you need is a roof top box. Then you just shove everything in and close the lid and off you go. You'll have filled all the other available space first of course so just think how much more you can take at once with a roof box on the car.

Think of it as adding another boot on the roof. Roof boxes are the ideal way to gain enormously in carrying capacity without buying a bigger car with all the extra costs and inconveniences that go with it. Think of things like parking, washing the car and your carbon footprint and you can see how much better off you are by just fitting the biggest roof top box your car can take.

Obviously it's not just for taking stuff to the civic amenities site that roof top boxes are so useful. Fit a roof box and suddenly your shopping trips become so much easier and going on holiday by car becomes a pleasure instead of a logistical nightmare. You may find it useful to know that, depending on what car you drive and what type of roof box you choose, you may even be able to fit two roof boxes side by side. That would probably only be a good idea if you're carrying bulk rather than weight of course. In any case if you go for the biggest and widest roof box suitable for your car that might be a better solution

Thule are the leading manufacturers of car roof boxes. You can buy a Thule roofbox from their extensive range of models to suit just about any vehicle you might own. They come in several sizes, up to 580 litres. They're all made from the same incredibly tough, durable, UV resistant material, and they're surprisingly light when empty.

Every Thule roofbox fits the Thule roof bar system to provide the total load security and the shape is aerodynamically designed to have little if any effect on the performance and handling of your car, or its fuel consumption. You shouldn't forget the extra height when using multi-storey car parks with low roofs. Check your home garage doorway for height before you put the car in there with the roof box fitted.

Every Thule roof box come with a simple central locking system and a patented dual force system to support the open lid so you don't have to.

Roof boxes are made to fit on roof bars, so you will need those fitted first. Any suitable roof bars will be OK, but remember that any Thule roofbox is primarily designed for the Thule system of roof bars and fittings.

You just need to choose the most appropriate Thule roof bars for your car and the Thule roof box that suits your needs best and then get them fitted. It's not difficult to fit them yourself but if you're not sure about it, remember you'll be carrying stuff in this box on your car roof, often at speed so it why not get them fitted professionally? It add's little to the cost and at however good the roof box is it's no good at all if not fitted properly.
